How well do you you know our fellow Chicagonista and charitable queen Karyn Brianne Watkins?
Each time Karyn surfaces on the social media scene, she is wearing a different hat.
Each hat she wears is a giving hat, one that shares, cares and makes us all more aware.
Sitting down with Karyn, we learn that The Fabulous Giver was inspired by her “mom’s giving spirit”. Karyn shared “that was a trait of hers that I always admired. She tutored foster children, taught Sunday School at church, and always had encouraging words to offer us and others. As her multiple sclerosis progressed, our family began to depend on the kindness of others as they cared for my mother, and in turn, my sister and I. No matter what happened with her health, my mother never stopped smiling or trying to spread warmth to others. On a daily basis, her spirit reminds me that we’re not alone and we have a responsibility to try and make the world a better place for another person, whether we know them or not. After my mom passed away, I took a year off from working to really evaluate what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I spent that time blogging, volunteering, and starting The Red Pump Project. I never saw myself taking a sabbatical from corporate America at 25, but surprisingly, that break has brought me closer to achieving my dreams. It’s funny how you always end up back on your destined path, no matter how many detours you take!”
Karyn co-founded The Red Pump Project with Lovette “Luvvie” Ajayi and the two have motivated the country to “Rock the Red Pump” bringing awareness to the issues surrounding Women, girls and HIV/AIDS.
March 10 is National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
Reflecting on how HIV/AIDS is affecting the female community is crucial in getting women to know their status, know the statistics and know their bodies. This will also, hopefully illuminate options while weighing in on how we, as a world, can position for a cure, better tolerance on issues and receive fair funding for all of the many components surrounding HIV/AIDS, its care, and those it affects … which is most of us, in one way or another.
