I am a theatre lover. I grew up participating in an after school theatre program, I majored in theatre in college and I have spent most of my career working for theatres.
So it is always important to me to live in a city that supports and presents good live theatre. Needless to say, living in Chicago is a theatre-lovers dream. From the big-named theatres like Steppenwolf and Goodman to the smaller, but no less amazing, companies like About Face and American Theatre Company, Chicago does theatre proud!
I love supporting the local companies, but I also love seeing the Broadway hits when they come to town. Broadway in Chicago does an amazing job of bringing in both current Broadway hits and theatre classics.
In the less than 2 years my husband and I have been in Chicago we’ve seen Wicked, Spring Awakening, Rent (for the millionth time–I’m kind of addicted!), Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia and just this past weekend we headed to the Bank of America Theatre for Avenue Q.
I have wanted to see Avenue Q since the show opened on Broadway in 2003. The premise is hilarious–Sesame Street-like puppets try to figure out life and love in New York City. Despite the puppets, this musical is NOT suitable for young kiddos as these puppets swear, drink and do the nasty!
I was more than impressed with the cast. Many of them play more than one character. But unlike a regular play or musical, they are not only dealing with different characterizations, but also different puppets! I was amazed at the way the actors/puppeteers really brought the puppet characters to life. I laughed at them and a few of them even broke my heart a little.
Avenue Q has sadly already moved on from Chicago, but do yourself a favor. Check out Broadway in Chicago’s website and make plans to see a show sometime soon! There’s a wide variety to choose from–Billy Elliott, Shrek the Musical (yes, THAT Shrek!), Wicked is returning–there’s truly something for everyone.
We are so lucky to live in a city that loves theatre. Take advantage of it!
